Why would someone do a boarding house development?

Boarding house development is a type of housing that might also be called studio or micro-apartments. For a developer with a property that is the right size and in the right location, a boarding house could offer a steady stream of income from multiple tenants and fill the need for affordable housing in NSW.

Max Fragar, our founder, Life Fellow PIA and Registered Planner, discusses why you should consider boarding house development.

Why boarding house development?

My name is Max Fragar, Council Approval Group.

Because boarding houses are comfortable, affordable, and close to services. They are fabulous for young people, people wanting to live close to work during the week or people that don’t want the responsibility of a larger dwelling.
Why would you do a boarding house development? It’s a great concept. It’s a great style of housing, in the context of the need for housing.
They are a very valid part of the equation when it comes to addressing the need for affordable housing. I think that it’s unfortunate that they’ve been called boarding houses. They should really be classified as studio apartments. I think we should be doing boarding houses and we’d love to help you do them.

Why do we need them?

Boarding house developments are not simple but, done properly, they’re a great thing. They provide a great long term rental return and you’ll feel satisfied that you provided housing for really special people like constables, nurses, teachers. These are the type of people we’re finding really love this style of accommodation.
