So is a granny flat in a front yard permitted? My name is Colin Fragar from Council Approval Group. The answer is generally no. Generally a granny flat needs to be beside or behind or underneath or on top of an existing dwelling.
It does very much depend on the jurisdiction that you’re in, so it’s very important to get the right advice up front.
Get the Right Advice on a Granny Flat in the Front Yard
It’s hard to speak specifics in a generic video. However, I would challenge you to think that perhaps there is a way to do it in the front yard. I have seen it done. What it did involve was to convert the existing house at the back, it was a very small house, and that became effectively the secondary dwelling. And then I built the primary dwelling in the front.
