So can I build a granny flat on my property? My name is Colin Fragar from Council Approval Group. We do literally thousands of these assessments almost every year. Before You Start Constructing a Granny Flat on Your Property
But to be able to answer that question, can I get a granny flat on my property? Can you get approval in your yard, on your property? The answer really rests on a few things and it’s really important to get this advice right and upfront. The reason for that is what I often see is people get locked into a builder, construction project, or trades person that’s doing a conversion of a garage or a basement only to find that they didn’t get the quickest path to approval, they didn’t get the best approval, or they got, even worse, no approval at all. As a result council is on their tail and they’re literally having to pay thousands of dollars worth of fines or demolishing all of the hard work that they’ve done.The answer rests on a few things and it’s really important to get this advice right and upfront.

This is a photograph of one of my own granny flats, which I did personally and this is something that I’m really proud of. I was actually really surprised at this property because the property itself was only pretty small and we’re able to get a granny flat in there. Now, interestingly, you’d never think this but the granny flat itself rented out for more than what the actual house did. So it’s got a principal dwelling which rents for less than the actual granny flat and it’s just made a huge amount to my family.So can you get council approval for granny flat? The answer that question is really going to depend on the council rules, the site constraints and really for you to be able to find the best possible path to approval.
