So is a granny flat in a front yard permitted? My name is Colin Fragar from Council Approval Group. The answer is generally no. Generally a granny flat needs to be beside or behind or underneath or on top of an existing dwelling.
It does very much depend on the jurisdiction that you’re in, so it’s very important to get the right advice up front.
Get the Right Advice on a Granny Flat in the Front YardIt’s hard to speak specifics in a generic video. However, I would challenge you to think that perhaps there is a way to do it in the front yard. And then I built the primary dwelling in the front. There’s a few tips and tricks that we can go through.
And what I recommend is that you grab a copy of Your Ultimate Guide to Council Approval. It’s a magazine we’ve put together and it goes through a whole bunch of different ideas about the council approval process, and really is designed to take some of that uncertainty out of the process for you. If you put in your contact details at councilapproval.com.au, we’ll send it to you free of charge.
Are You Ready to Take the Next Step? Also, if you do have a particular property in mind, you’re probably thinking about the development options. If you’re thinking about a granny flat in the front yard, maybe there’s something better we can do for you.
