Hi, Colin Fragar here from Council Approval Group. Today I want to talk about what are the roles and responsibilities of a town planner. Now if you’re watching this video, you may have approached it from two different angles. One is a career based one. You’re looking for a job or employment. I highly recommend you go to our careers page for that. However, what I want to talk specifically to you today about is those people who are considering hiring a town planner. They’re not sure about the role of a town planner and how it connects to their project.

Advantages of a Town Planner

So the roles and responsibilities of a town planner change depending on the firm that you’re dealing with. And what we have done at the Council Approval Group is to be able to put the town planner as the project leader. Why we’ve done that is that the town planner knows the language of the council. Often they have worked within local government, they know how to speak the talk and walk the walk, they often know people within Council, they know the rules, and they’re able to streamline that application process.

Also, town planners fundamentally understand one crucial, crucial point, which is so often missed. I really, really need you to emphasize this in your minds. And that is a town planner finds the highest and best use for you. An engineer or surveyor or an architect will largely build within their professional framework, but they won’t see the bigger picture. The town planner, a good town planner that’s qualified, will source the best possible approval avenue, the best possible development type and be able to manage the whole process for you because they see the bigger picture. Their job is to find opportunities. Their job is to depart from local planning rules to be able to find those departures which allow you, for example, to have a larger dwelling, a smaller lot size, and all of those different things are incredibly important.
